VFF: Visual Design Traditions and their Disastrous Legacy

Friday, December 7, 2018 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Speaker(s):
Jennifer Landin · NCSU Biological Sciences

Classic images in science - evolutionary trees, anatomy of a cell, life cycles - have been recycled for generations. Are they the most effective visualizations? (Do we even question their effectiveness?) Dr. Landin's research focuses on images steeped in tradition, their historical origins and how they have (or haven't) changed over time. Her experiments show that small changes in visual design greatly impact the viewer's interpretation.
