The Pauli Murray Project Durham Civil and Human Rights Map

The Pauli Murray Project Durham Civil and Human Rights Map
2009-present

Started in 2009, the map grows each year when students in Barbara Lau's Duke University course research, write, select photographs and narrate new markers. We see the map as a community resource for teachers, students, residents and anyone interested in social history. This effort is supported by the Pauli Murray Project at the Duke Human Rights Center/ Franklin Humanities Institute. For more information, visit www.paulimurrayproject.org.

Project History

As a tribute to Durham’s exquisite, intriguing, sometimes hidden, but fascinating history, we decided to create this interactive map. The map markers detail information about prominent locations relating to civil and human rights in Durham through text, photographs, and audio documentary.

Explore the map by topic, date or location. Create your own walking tour!

Special thanks to Savas Labs for redesigning the map in 2016. We see the map as a community resource for teachers, students, residents and anyone interested in social history and engaged communities.

This map is interactive and we welcome your suggestions for other pertinent markers. Please send suggestions and comments to Barbara Lau, Pauli Murray Project Director at balau@duke.edu.
